Hand-tinted photograph, approximately 8½x6½ on a larger stiff mount.
Crow Dog was tried and convicted of the killing of the Sioux chief Spotted Tail in 1881 but was later freed when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the territorial government had no jurisdiction over the crime.
