Collection of 39 signatures of French painters from the 19th century. The signatures are from the list of attendance for the committee of jurists for the Salon of 1888 (officially renamed the Société des Artistes Français in 1881), the preeminent art exhibition in Paris dating back to 1725. The President of the Salon in 1888 was William-Adolphe Bouguereau, an academic painter and one of the most celebrated artists in France during his lifetime. In the years surrounding this exhibition, France was consumed with debate regarding the emerging and increasingly influential Impressionist painters whose work Bouguereau denounced and worked to keep from the Salon exhibitions. List of signatures includes: William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Leon Bonnat, George Louis Charles Busson, Jacques Humbert, Tony Robert Fleury, Guillemet, Bernier, Boulanger, Jules Breton, Benjamin Constants, Carolus-Duran, Fernand Cormon, Dagnan-Bouveres, Edouard Detaille, Ernest Duez, Feyen-Perrin, Henri Gervex, Harpignes, J.P. Laurens, Jules Lefebvre, Hector Le Roux, Luminais, Emmanuel Lansyer, Albert Maignan, Aime Morot, L.O. Merson, Leon Pelouse, Charles Henri Pille, Puvis de Chavannes, Alexandre Rapin, Alfred Roll, Saint Pierre, Vayson, Antoine Vollon, Edmon Yon.
