2 volumes. xxiv, [1], 566, viii, [1], 568 pp. 14 engraved plates including 2 frontispiece portraits. (8vo) 8¼x5¼, half calf and marbled boards, rebacked with original spines laid down, spines gilt decorated, morocco spine labels. First Edition.

The voyage out was on the whaleship "Tuscan" and their stay was mostly in the islands with several accounts of whaleships and their captains including an account by George Pollard, captain of the ill-fated "Essex" of Nantucket. Pollard's narrative is printed here for the first time and invites comparison with Owen Chase's Narrative. Hill I, pg 295; Bagnall 5667.

Condition:

Spines chipped, boards and edges rubbed; an occasional spot of foxing; else good.
