Superb love letter to Charmian in which he calls her his comrade “Dear Woman” and expresses his concerns (or non-concerns) over his amorous lovemaking. He sends a note from an old girl friend to prove that he is Charmian's forever. In part: "...we are mates, you and I, and we shall travel the out trail shoulder to shoulder & hand in hand, giving equally, sharing equally, and dominating each other not at all...How glad you make me when you tell me you love me for myself. Were it any one else I would not care why or how; but with you, I want it for myself...I confess the sneaking little fear...that possibly, possibly...you might have been swayed a trifle by the fact that I had written some few things and had my name in the mouths of a few men. That you should love me for myself is almost too good to be true, but I believe, I believe, and I know that for the first time in my life, & for the last time, I love with the utter abandon of the Great Love." The letter is unsigned, a normal happenstance in his letters to Charmian while he was still married to Bessie, to protect their identities.
