Headed at top, beneath Steinbeck's typed name and address and above the title "(The following short piece for the Ford Motor Company is written for the 50th anniversary of the issuance of the Model T Ford.)" Steinbeck writes primarily about his personal relationship to the Model T: "...I came to closeness to automobiles quite late in life. I am exactly the same age as the Model T Ford, but it and I were seventeen before welded..." [Actually, Steinbeck was born in 1902, the Model T was launched in 1908]. "...I guess Model T's would run forever, if you would let them. I was well gone in adolescence before I came by one at a price I could afford to pay - fifty dollars. It was almost as old as I was, and it had been around a helluva lot more than I had and was probably smarter to begin with..."
