Elliot, an associate of the Smithsonian Institution, was appointed in 1872 to visit the Pribylov Islands for the purpose of studying the life and habits of the fur-seal. The notes, surveys, and hypotheses of this volume are founded upon the author's personal observations in the seal-rookeries of St. Paul and St. George, during the seasons of 1872 to 1874 and 1876.
