xvi, 317 pp. Contributions by Amy Pascoe, H.H. Hilton, J.H. Taylor, H.J. Whigham, Mr. Sutton and Sons. Illustrated with 72 plates from photographs, including frontispiece. 8x5½, original gilt-decorated red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black endpapers, top edge gilt. First American Edition, "New Impression" or First "Cheap Edition."
Originally published in April 1899 by Longmans, Green & Co., reprinted one time in June 1899, before this edition, done in a slightly smaller format in February 1900. This, apparently, is the first American edition, which is taken from the first "Cheap Edition" with the American publisher's paper label affixed over the British publisher on the title page stating "New York: Fowler & Wells Co." Spine imprint still shows "Longmans & Co." Title page states "New Impression." No mention of the American edition in Donovan & Murdoch. Murdoch mentions the cheap edition (1900), and writes: "Like many of the books that Mr. Hutchinson had a hand in, this is a complete review of the game, from a history of its development to a chapter on how to make a golf club...also includes short biographical sketches of many of the leading players of the day" - see Murdoch 384.
Condition:
Spine a bit darkened, short tears to ends, a few scattered small stains, mild rubbing and shelf wear; glue repairing to hinges, yellow crayon or marker coloring and a couple dark stains on page xiii, occasional foxing; about very good and scarce.
