Title, contents leaf, and 13 lithographed maps, plans, etc. (on 12 sheets, 2 double-page), nearly all in color. 22x17, unbound with original wrappers present. First Edition.

Issued by the United States Geological Survey under the directorship of John Wesley Powell. The presence of quicksilver, or mercury deposits in California was important to the refining of the state's most famous mineral, gold. Included are diagrams of the New Almaden Mine.

Condition:

Disbound, wrappers very chipped; last 3 sheets with long closed tears, other with marginal tear and/or edge-wear.
