With 62 hand-colored maps (25 are double-page including the Hemispheres), plus insets, all on 62 map-sheets; 2 hand-colored plates showing the Mountains and Rivers of the world (double-page) and a time table diagram; 6 hand-colored charts (on 3 pages); several wood-engraved vignettes (including four global diagrams hand-colored); plus an additional pictorial steel-engraved title page. (Folio) 18x14½, original quarter dark green morocco and cloth, decoratively blind-stamped, stamped and lettered in gilt, front cover stamped with U.S. Seal vignette and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and page edges.

The 1861 Johnson Civil War era atlas, with many important maps, including a double-page New Military Map with 9 hand-colored inset plans of the major Southern harbors. This map is not listed on the contents leaf and perhaps is a late addition in the year that the Civil War began. Also, an interesting double-page map of the Southwestern United States, showing California with Nevada merging over to the Sierra Nevada mountains, Arizona shown south of a much larger New Mexico territory, along with Utah and Colorado present. Other double-page maps include: The World; North America; various U.S. states including New England, New York, Texas, etc.; South America; Europe and many of its countries; Africa; The Roman Empire, etc. Thirty-five of the maps relating to the Americas, most of which pertain to the United States, including a city plan of Washington DC with Georgetown.
