Author’s first book and the winner of the 1953 National Book Award for fiction. A cornerstone in American literature as well as African-American literature, tells the story of a black man's existence in a white world. The nameless narrator describes growing up in a black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, and later moving to New York to become the chief spokesman for the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood." After retreating from all the violence and confusion, he resides to his basement lair and lives as an invisible man to the world.
