William Humble Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley (1867-1932), fourth Governor-General of Australia, was born in London, and at 17, after his father died, he inherited enormous wealth along with his title, Earl of Dudley. He became part of the social circle of the Prince of Wales, and was active in the Conservative Party; thus, holding office in the 1895 government of Lord Salisbury. In 1902 Dudley was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and after the Liberal government came into power in 1905, King Edward VII gave Dudley the post of Governor-General of Australia. After arriving in Sydney in 1908, he quickly encountered various controversial and circumstantial events, forcing him to leave in 1911. He would also later serve in some capacity during the First World War, and finally retired to his estates in London where he lived out the rest of his life. This collection was obtained by our consignor from Grace, Countess of Dudley.
