With 68 hand-colored maps (26 are double-page) plus insets and other small maps, all on 62 map-sheets (including double-page maps); 2 hand-colored double-page plates, showing the Mountains and Rivers of the world, and a time table diagram; several wood-engraved vignettes; plus a steel-engraved plate before the title page. (Folio) 18x14½, original ¼ and morocco and green cloth, rebacked with black leatherette lettered in gilt, front cover stamped with U.S. Seal vignette and lettered in gilt, new endpapers.

The 1861 Johnson atlas, with many important maps, including a double-page New Military Map with 9 inset plans of the Southern harbors. This map is not listed on the contents leaf and perhaps is a late addition in the year that the Civil War began. Also, an interesting double-page map of the Southwestern United States, showing California with Nevada merging over to the Sierra Nevada mountains, Arizona shown south of a much larger New Mexico territory, along with Utah and Colorado present.
