• T.L.s. from English novelist E. Phillips Oppenheim to the editor of the New York Times, relating his plans for the autumn, which include a round of golf a day. Oct. 11, 1910.

American humorist and short story writer John Kendrick Bangs proposes membership in the prestigious St. Andrews Golf Club, oldest golf club in the United Sates, for "Master John Black Cornell... about 15 years old... a gentleman in every way, and plays a rattling good game of golf..." Bangs notes that Mr John Reed [sic, should be Reid] is the seconder for young Cornell - Reid was the founder of St. Andrews (NY), the first permanent golf site course in America, and is considered the "father of golf in America."  John Black Cornell was the son of John M. Cornell, and the grandson of the namesake of the Cornell Iron Works. There is also a letter from the superintendent of the St. Andrews Golf Club to its secretary, noting an address change by Bangs.
