First state with two ad pages at end: p.[263] listing Baum books published under pseudonym "Laura Bancroft"; p.[264] listing the four Baum titles, The Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, and John Dough and the Cherub; gatherings printed on tinted stocks arranged in the order called for by Hanff & Greene; rear cover with silhouette portraits of Dorothy & Ozma; spine imprint printed in upper and lower case letters. This is one of the "first copies off the press," without damaged type on p.34, line 4 ("Toto on"); and with the numeral and caption present beneath the illustration on p.129. This is a variant binding, in coarse rather than smooth cloth; the bibliographers note "some copies have been reported in a coarse-weave cloth sometimes described as buckram."
