Description:
Two page, 4to, on imprinted pale-green White House stationery, to Mr. James T. Williams, Jr. He writes: “You will recollect that you called upon me some time early in the fall and we discussed some public questions which I thought could well be promoted by the Hearst press in public interest. Among the matters discussed was that of strengthening the immigration laws by more selective and restricted immigration and the strengthening of the measures for deportation of alien criminals and smuggled aliens. I welcomed the support which appeared in the editorials of the Hearst press during the subsequent months, in which editorials it quoted the recommendations which I had made to the Congress a year ago should be adopted and the deportation laws should be strengthened. Again in my message of December 2nd I repeated these recommendations to Congress and elaborated the deportation question. I now note an elaborate editorial in the Washington Herald of December 9th attacking me for being opposed to such measures. I do not assume that you could have written such an editorial, but I would be glad if you would call attention of the managers of the Hearst press to the absolute untruth of their statement as shown by their own previous editorials and the public record.” With original envelope.
