Description:
One page, small 8vo. One page from the manuscript of “Mahomet and His Successors,” with approximately 80 words in Irving’s hand, with several revisions and cross-outs, and numbered “548” by him in the upper right. The text concerns a Muslim’s pilgrimage to Mecca, and begins: “To promote peace and good will among his companions in the caravan he is, moreover, to be liberal in the donations and charities throughout his pilgrimage. When arrived at some place in the vicinity of Mecca he allows his hair and nails to grow...[he] assumes the...Pilgrim garb, consisting of two scarfs without seams or decorations and of any stuff excepting silk...” A pencil notation in another hand in the upper left margin reads: “Mahomet/P.367 appendix N.Y. 1850.”
Mahomet is a biography of Muhammed, the founder of Islam; written late in Irving’s life, he still used some original Arabic source for the work. Provenance: The Estelle Doheny Collection.
