Half-titles in each volume, advertisement leaf in volume one. 602 (of 605?) hand-colored, copper-engraved plates including one double-page scene, with 6 hand-colored dedication leaves, and Volumes 1-5 with engraved colophon pieces. (folio) 15¼x9¾, contemporary or early 19th-century calf with marbled endpapers, morocco lettering and numbering pieces, spines gilt. Splendid, brightly colored plates depicting military and religious costume from around the world. Sections include Middle Easterners, Turks, Egyptians, Ethiopians, Indians (including a striking series of Indian mendicants), the monastic orders of Europe and the knights and nobility of Europe. Many figures are on horseback or in scenes. According to ABPC, this copy is the most complete record of Bar's colored plates to be sold at auction in the past 25 years. Rare.

Lot Amendments

Condition:
Some expert restorations to joints and spine ends, light wear to morocco pieces; one gathering in Vol. 5 stained, 4" closed tear to text leaf in Vol. 4, dedication leaves in Vols 2-3 bound close at gutter with minor loss, a few outer margins trimmed or stained along outside blank edges, very occasional light browning or tiny blemishes. Overall clean and bright in a handsome binding, near fine.
