Illustrated from 91 works of art by Romare Bearden, including 46 in color (1 a four page fold-out). 13¼x11¼, blue buckram, lettered in silver, pictorial jacket, original publisher's printed shipping box. First Edition. Numerous large illustrations from drawings, paintings, and collages from 1940 to 1972 portraying a unique American experience. Romare Bearden (1914-1983), painter and collage maker, fills his works with the symbols and myths of the American black experience. Bearden was George Grosz's student at the "Art Students League" during the mid-1930's, where he also founded the "306 Group" for black artists living in Harlem.
