Illustrated with 72 steel-engraved plates; 119 wood-engraved plates, including a scene with Napoleon, by various French artists including Charlet, A. de Lemud, Johannot, Grenier, Jacque, Pauquet, Penguilly, de Rudder, Raffet, Sandoz, Massart, Lalaisse, etc.; with tissue-guards. "Musique" volume with numerous music scores throughout; "Biographie" volume with a mounted lithograph frontispiece portrait, and 2 folding three-page facsimile autograph letters by Béranger in the back. 9x5¾, bound in contemporary ¼ red morocco and mottled boards, spines tooled and lettered in gilt, raised bands, marbled edges and endpapers. The complete literary and musical works or "Oeuvres Anciennes" of Pierre Jean de Béranger (1780-1857), along with a biography. Béranger, a French poet and writer of popular songs, is best remembered for his liberal and humanitarian views during a rapid and violent period of change in French society. Rubbing to spines and extremities, light soiling, slight fraying to a few spine heads; foxing throughout, a few of the signatures loose (chiefly in Musique volume), 1 steel-engraved plate upside down, another plate with a text leaf detached in Vol. III; else a very good set.
