[2], 182, [8]; [6], 156, [8] pp. Illustrated with 119 color lithographed plates in Vol. I, and 41 duotone lithographed plates in Vol. II; tissue guards. 14½x11¼, period half brown morocco & goilt-lettered cloth, cloth, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt. Superbly illustrated ornithology, wherein over 700 species and varieties of North American birds are represented, with a "popular account of their habits and characteristics." The second volume consists of Alfred Brehm's Ornithology; or the Science of Birds. "Studer's Birds," while not as famous today as the works of John J. Audubon, were in their day more widely disseminated, and were well matched to that "Democratic Art," chromolithography. Ayer pp. 333-334; Nissen 473-474.
