Chappell, Walter

Date:
1958

Description:
Silver photograph. Signed and dated by Chappell ink on the mount, lower left. 6¾x9½, archivally framed under plexiglass. This 1958 print is very rare as Chappell lost virtually all of his earliest prints and negatives in a disastrous fire in 1961. The important abstract image is representative of the art from this student and collaborator of Minor White. Chappell is known for his intensely provocative photographs of the human body and landscapes. He served as curator of prints and exhibits at the George Eastman Kodak House from 1957 to 1961. He died at El Rito, New Mexico, in 2000, at age 75.
