Havana Balcony

Author:
Evans, Walker

Place:
Havana, Cuba

Date:
1932

Description:
Vintage gelatin silver print. 9¼x5½, unmounted. With Walker Evans' blindstamp on the reverse, with pencil numbers XVIII and 6 in boxes, and at the bottom, "39" in a circle, with pencil caption "Havana Balcony #3." View of the corner of a building, with balconies. At age thirty, Walker Evans, a struggling young photographer who was yet to gain fame for his depression-era photographs of impoverished Americans, went to Cuba to help illustrate a new book by radical U.S. journalist Carleton Beals. His photographs recorded both the misery and beauty of the Caribbean island, and the present photograph is both artistic and journalistic, capturing the ramshackle yet elegant architecture.
