Typed letter signed by the author tipped-in on the front free endpaper dated January 29, 1903 from New York City. The Letter is addressed to Herbert Bashford, Editor of "The Literary West" located in San Francisco and reads as follows: "My dear Sir: I send you in this mail a first edition Author's Presentation copy of "The Leopard's Spots". It is now in its 100th thousand and is selling faster than at any time since its publication last spring. Grant Richards has just brought it out in London, and it is being translated into German in Munich. I trust, in view of the current discussion of the Race Problem excited by the President's Southern policy you will find this view of the Southern white man's side of timely interest. Sincerely, (signed) Thomas Dixon Jr." This is the first book in a trilogy which romanticized the Klu Klux Klan and was the basis for the controversial and racist movie "The Birth of A Nation" directed by D.W. Griffith.
