Interested in botany, Bradbury came to America and spent much time in the St. Louis area. Accompanied by another English botanist, Thomas Nuttall, he joined Wilson Hunt's party on the first leg of the journey up the Missouri, stopping near the Mandan villages. Lacking pp. [iii-iv], the first page of the preface immediately follows the title. The errata slip, present in this copy, is often lacking.
