With printed presentation slip inscribed and signed in ink by Canfield mounted on the front pastedown, indicating this biographical sketch was first published in The History of the Red River Valley, North Dakota and Park Region of Northwestern Minnesota. The publishers provided Canfield "with a few extra copies," for him to issue separately for presentation to friends. The present copy is inscribed "To my venerable `Companion du Voyage' across the continent in 1869, Sam Wilkerson, Esq..."
