A Journey in North America, Containing a Survey of the Countries Watered by the Mississipi, Ohio, Missouri, and other Affluing Rivers; with Exact Observations on the Course and Soundings of These Rivers, and on the Towns, Villages, Hamlet and Farms of that part of the New-World...

Collot, [George Henri] Victor

O. Lange

3 vols. incl. atlas. xxvii, [5], iv, v, [1], 310; [4], 297; atlas with title-page, list of plates, & 38 maps, plans & views from copper engravings, 11 of them folding. 10½x7¼ & 13¼x10¼, period half morocco & marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt. Important account of explorations in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys made in 1796, with some relation of the Missouri River and adjacent areas. The atlas contains signficant and detailed maps and views. Howes calls General Collot's survey "the most detailed of the western interior upt to his time." This is a reprint of the very rare English language edition of this work which was originally published in 1826, simultaneously with and by the same publisher, Arthur Bertrand of Paris, as the French language edition. The text and atlas were printed before Collot's death in 1805, but not published, and the whole run came into the hands of Bertrand some twenty years later. He issued 100 copies of the English edition, and 300 of the French, making waste paper of the rest of the impression. Howes C601; Wagner-Camp 31a (note).
