Description:
Vol. II (of 2) only. [2], 298, [18] pp. Illustrated with 2 folding copper-engraved plates; folding hand-colored copper-engraved map. 8¼x5¼, period half morocco & marbled boards, spine dec. in gilt, morocco lettering piece.
The third and fourth missives of Cortes to King Charles V describing his conquest of Mexico; Vol. I contained the second letter, as well as introductory matter. This second volume is significant for the presence of the two plates, depicting Cortes' encounters with Montezuma, and especially for the fine hand-colored map of "Mexico, of Nieuw Spanje," from the map by Kitchin, with Texas named ("Tecas"), and an inset of the Valley of Mexico. The first volume contained no maps or illustrations. The statement on the title-page that this is Vol. II ("Tweede Deel") has been covered over with a typographic ornament, and the top of the first page of text has also been sophisticated, rather crudely. Sabin 16962.
