The Credit Mobilier affair was one of the key political scandals during the Grant administration, hinging around the fleecing of the Union Pacific Railroad by its president and his brother through the agency of the Credit Mobilier company, basically a dummy corporation they had set up. Congressmen and other high officials were given, or sold at very generous terms, shares in Credit Mobilier to buy their cooperation. Many other behind-the-scenes affairs are also discussed.
