The final resolution of the question of the border between the United State and British Canada in the Northwest, which had vexed the two powers since the early 1820's, and given rise to the famous campaign slogan "54 40 or fight." The border was finally settled as 49 degrees, the U.S. losing out on that one, but the agreement allowed the expansionists within Polk's administration to focus on the Southwest and California, where they were to wrest vast territories from Mexico.
