Two original Civil War era diaries; the first volume approximately 97 pages and covering the years 1858 to 1859; the second volume approx. 356 pages and covering the years 1864 to 1872. Both, 7¼x6, bound in quarter calf and boards, hand-written (apparently by the same hand) on both sides of each leaf. Original diaries.

Two original diaries discussing the everyday farming life in apparently in Montreal, including the weather, daily routines and duties and other activities as listed per day. The first diary entry in the second volume begins: Aug. 1, 1864: "The month of July has been one of extreme heat and drought. The crop of potatoes and oats are reduced to one half at least. The heat yesterday was 96º.... Aug. 3, 1864: The weather has changed. Rain today a cool N. East storm. News from the armies. Horrid fighting going on and thousands upon thousands of lives taken. When will the war end and the slaughter cease. Aug. 4, 1864: Day of fasting and prayer appointed by the President." The first volume starts on January 1, 1858 and ends December 24, 1859 with the final five pages listing various payments for that time period. The second volume starts on August 1, 1864 and ends July 22, 1872 with the first four pages of charts giving dates and numbers and short notes. Also, includes some periodical clippings affixed on the rear pages of both volumes, many from a Philadelphia publication.
