Title:
The Lifted and Subsided Rocks of America, with their Influences on the Oceanic, Atmospheric, and Land Currents, and on the Distribution of Races

Author:
Catlin, George

Place:
London

Publisher:
Trübner & Co.

Date:
1870

Description:
xii, 228 pp. 2 color lithographed maps on 1 folding sheet. 7½x4¾, original cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Scarce work by the noted ethnologist and artist whose accounts and depictions of the Mandans and other Plains Indians gained him his greatest fame. Catlin postulates a radical concept of the formation of the American continents with an almost complete absence of geological knowledge. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the book is the appendix, in which Catlin vigorously defends his articles describing certain Mandan customs which were deemed ficticious by Schoolcraft. With the bookplate of John Sinkankas.
