Essentially a translation, with additions by Jameson and Mitchell, of Vol. I of Cuvier's "Ossements Fossiles." Cuvier discusses the Deluge and various strata that display alternating marine and freshwater deposits, subtly challenging accepted Biblical conceptions of creation. He also discusses the disappearance of certain species and the sudden appearance of others. Jameson describes various "ancient rocks" and their minerals, coral islands, etc., and Mitchell contributes significant material on the geology of the eastern part of North America.
