Title:
Agriculture of New-York: Comprising an Account of the Classification, Composition and Distribution of the Soils and Rocks, and the Natural Waters of the Different Geological Formations; Together with a Condensed View of the Climate and the Agricultural Productions of the State

Author:
Emmons, Ebenezer

Place:
Albany

Publisher:
C. Van Benthuysen

Date:
1846

Description:
Vol. I (of V) only. [2], xi, [1], 371 pp. Illustrated with 21 lithographed plates, 6 of them folding, 5 of these hand-colored; large folding hand-colored agricultural map; 1 small lithographed sketch map; added engraved title. 11¼x9, modern cloth, spine lettered in gilt; bound by John Sinkankas, stamped with his initials. Sought-after first volume in Emmons landmark 5-volume work on the Agriculture of New York, issued in the series, Natural History of New York. This volume is especially noteworthy for the four hand-colored folding panoramic views. Internal evidence suggests that there should have been a geologic map in addition to the agricultural one, but it was never issued with the book, having been "stolen or destroyed by persons unknown" prior to publication. This is explained in a 1½-page typed note by John Sinkankas, describing his detective work in discovering the reason for the shortfall. With the bookplate of John Sinkankas.
