Important work on California gems by the noted jewel expert George Frederick Kunz. Although Kunz is the author, his name does not appear on the title page, and is only referred to in the letter of transmittal (p. 3). This omission greatly annoyed Kunz, as did the use of the term "compiled" in reference to Kunz's data, when in fact much of the text is original work never before published. Sinkankas tells the story of how Kunz obtained copies of the second edition of the book and, apparently at his own expense, inserted the words "By George Frederick Kunz, Ph.D" on the title page.
