First edition of White's oft-reprinted Natural History of Selborne, probably the most famous work on natural history by an Englishman of the late 18th century. American poet James R. Lowell said of the book: "...For me it has gained in charm with years. Open the book where you will, it takes you out of doors. In our broiling July weather one can walk out with this genially garrulous Fellow of Oriel and find refreshment instead of fatigue. In simplicity of taste and natural refinement he reminds one of Walton; in tenderness towards what he would have called the brute creation, of Cowper." This copy has been expertly recased and restored in the contemporary binding; the folding plate is backed with old linen. With the gilt leather book label of Robert Hartshorne, and the armorial bookplate of Henry White.
