Lithographed map, hand-colored, printed on two sheets joined together. 45x176 cm. (17¾x69¾"), mounted on linen some time ago, hinged to board.

Rare and iconic map of Manhattan, noteworthy for showing the original land and groundwater characteristics of the famously build-up city. These features include streams, ponds and wetlands, reservoirs and landfill, with location of piers, streets, aqueducts and sewers. "Prepared for the Council of Hygiene and Public Health" on pasted label. Includes a color key and three ancillary map profiles: "Section across Central Park, Section from 50th Street to Brooklyn Heights, Section from Hoboken to Brooklyn." OCLC/WorldCat lists only seven institutional library with original examples of the map. Stokes, Iconography of Manhattan Island, V. 3, p. 777-778 & pl. 155; Cohen and  Augustyn. Manhattan in Maps, p. 137ff.

Lot Amendments

Map somewhat darkened, rubbed portion near center causing two holes about a half inch each, which have repairs, a few other instances of minor wear or repairs; overall very good, quite rare, a fragile map seldom found in reasonable condition. Because of its size, additional shipping charges will occur.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
