Thirteen works in thirty volumes. First editions of George Eliot's works, including all of her novels, two collections of poetry, one volume of her posthumously collected essays, and the 3-volume biography by her husband J. W. Cross, comprising:

  • Scenes from Clerical Life. 2 volumes (1858).
  • Adam Bede. 3 volumes (1859).
  • Mill on the Floss. 3 volumes (1860).
  • Silas Marner. 1 volume (1861).
  • Romola. 3 volumes (1863).
  • Felix Holt. 3 volumes (1866).
  • The Spanish Gypsy. 1 volume (1868).
  • Middlemarch. 4 volumes (1871-2).
  • Legend of Jubal and Other Poems. 1 volume (1874).
  • Daniel Deronda. 4 volumes (1876).
  • Impressions of Theophrastus Such. 1 volume (1879).
  • Essays and Leaves from a Note-Book. 1 volume (1884).

Octavos of various sizes, most volumes uniformly bound in full tan calf, spines gilt, red and green morocco labels, top edges gilt. Adam Bede is in a modern binding, similar in decoration to the others but with some minor differences. First Editions.

Bound by Riviere & Son but for Adam Bede which was bound by Baytun-Riviere.


Lot Amendments

Condition:
Some faint staining to lower edges of most volumes, light scuffing and a few small chips, rear cover of one volume (Spanish Gypsy) detached, both covers of Middlemarch, Vol. 1 detached; overall very good, still a quite attractive shelf of books.

We have a full service shipping department to ensure proper packing and safe delivery of purchases at reasonable cost. We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
