Presentation copy, inscribed "To Archibald Campbell Swinton Esq, with kind regards from the author" on front free endpaper. Very rare study, first published in the Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal for July 1841. The title page on the present volume is dated 1841. However, this seems a (much) later issue, with printed preface before the title-page "The Notices of Earthquake Shocks contained in this volume were written by me many years ago, and printed by Messrs Neill and Co.... who lately reminded me that the sheets were still lying unfinished in their office. I regret that they are incomplete, and that the state of my health prevents me adding to them now...," dated August 1887. Despite his protestations, Milne-Home must have made some additions, since earthquakes in 1844 are treated upon. OCLC/WorldCat lists only three copies, at Edinburgh University, the University of Glasgow, and Southern Methodist University, none mentioning the 1887 preface, but with the same number of pages, not including the preface leaf, as the present edition.
