Autograph Letter Signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne, to Wm. H. Adams, regarding residences of other writers
Hawthorne, Nathaniel
West Newton, Mass.
March 4, 1852

11 lines, in ink, on 1st page of 4-page stampless cover, address on the 4th page with postmark and traces of sealing wax. 22.4x18 cm. (8¾x7").

The American novelist, short story writer and man of letters, writes to William H. Adams at Amherst College, directing him to the home residences of other writers, members, it seems, of the "Knickerbocker Group." "Bancroft and Halleck live in New York, and so, I think, does Paulding. I do not know where Mayo(?) resides, but a letter would probably reach him through his publisher, G.P. Putnam, of New York. Duane(?) lives in Boston, except during the _____? season. Yours truly, Nath'l Hawthorne." The first three writers mentioned would be George Bancroft,  American historian and statesman, sometime Secretary of the Navy who established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845; Fitz-Greene Halleck, American poet notable for his satires; and James Kirke Paulding, an American writer who also served as the United States Secretary of the Navy. A letter significant for its associations, one of the leading American authors of the 19th century making reference to the homes of his literary associates.
