Fascinating and informative record kept by a machinist aboard a tanker build in 1916 for the Gulf Oil Company, one of the  so-called Seven Sisters oil companies. which began operations in 1901. The tanker "Gulfmaid" was lunched in 1916 at the yards of New York Shipbuilding Co., Camden, NJ. It was the ninth tanker built at this yard for Gulf Oil. The anonymous machinist who kept this record of his employment and work goes into great detail of his many tasks, with occasional sketches illustrating the devices on which he was working, such ans on one Dec. 21, "Pulled out steam piston on aft boiler fuel pump. Cut slots in rings but left them 1/16" diam. to long, then returned them to fit cylinder..." There are occasional entries of more personal nature, as "Sent twenty dollars home by Jimmy the cook the charges were $1.22. The steward paid for my laundry which was 81 cents. The second pumpman quit. Received card from Jack."
