3 autograph letters signed, all in his hand, to a “George”, 1893, 1897 and 1901. The first letter is concerned with a visit to George’s house, and leaving for Philadelphia. “Weather not good and the fishing  is slow, and they catch only enough to eat etc”.  The 1897 letter is on his printed Glbralter, Put-In-Bay  Ottawa County, Ohio letterhead, and he refers with sympathy concerning his friend’s mother “who is enduring pain. He is sending a parcel of books, and candy for the dear ones, and the weather is too stormy to fish”. The 1901 letter refers to him arriving and being picked up by carriage and meeting John  Carroll, and going by tug directly to Gibralter, without waiting for the regular boat, along with other details of the meeting.

Jay Cooke, American financier, who helped finance the Union war effort during the Civil War, and post war development of railroads in the Northwestern United States.  In 1870 he financed the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Chatty letters narrating a portion of his life history.
