Title:
First Footsteps In East Africa; or, An Exploration of Harar

Author:
Burton, Richard F.

Place:
London

Publisher:
Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans

Date:
1856

Description:

xl, [2], 648 pp. 4 color lithograph plates, 2 maps. (8vo) 20.3x10.5 cm (8x4¼") original violet cloth, stamped and lettered in gilt on front and spine, and in blind on rear. First Edition.

The exceedingly rare first issue with Appendix IV present on pages (591)-594, though the text ending mid-sentence at the end of page 593. Page (595) is the fly-title for Appendix V, verso blank. This appendix was the only one to be printed in Latin, although it is titled in English: A Brief Description of Certain Peculiar Customs. "Penzer had seen no copy [with the appendix]. It is most probable that only those few copies for Burton's own private use were ever printed with 'Appendix IV'. Burton's own library... did not contain a copy with Appendix IV." This copy being perhaps a "prize" edition of the first issue, as Penzer describes the first issue as having a page height of 9¼" and with edges uncut and ornamental stamping in blind on the covers rather than gilt as the present copy is on the front. Extremely rare. Penzer, p.60-62. Bookplate of the "House of Belt". Prize inscription on front endpaper.

Lot Amendments

Condition:
Binding faded and worn, binding detached at front hinge, a bit shaken, a few signatures sprung; still a good copy of this great rarity of the Burton canon.
