Finely bound by the Harcourt Bindery. Bound at the front of Volume 1 are three manuscript items, as issued. Best known today perhaps as the collaborator with Mark Twain on the pointed American political satire "The Gilded Age", Warner was a popular essayist, novelist, and travel writer who in his capacity as owner and editor of the Hartford Courier and later Harper's New Monthly Magazine, became one of the most important literary tastemakers in late 19th century America.. The original holographic manuscript leaves include a two page letter concerning matters at the Courant, a page from his popular account of travels in the Middle East, "In the Levant", and an interesting passage from an article he wrote for Harper's New Monthly Magazine in 1895 in which Warner expresses his misgivings about dining on beef shipped from considerable distances by refrigerated rail car, rather than dressed by the local butcher.
