The first published edition - the illustrator John Tenniel was deeply dissatisfied with the printing of the illustrations in the first printing and convinced Carroll to suppress the book at his own expense. Only about 28 copies of that 1865 Macmillan first issue survive, most in institutional collections. Our copy has the inverted "S" on the last line of the Contents page; pale blue endpapers, thought to be early issue points; page 30 correctly numbered. An early copy with a gift inscription dated Christmas 1865 on front endpaper.
