On July 17, 1863, accompanied by his good friend Fitz Hugh Ludlow, and new friends Virgil Williams and Enoch Wood Perry, Albert Bierstadt arrived in Yosemite for the first time. His paintings from that trip would catapult him to world fame and cement a relationship with the valley that he would nurture the remainder of his life. At the time of this sitting, Albert had just completed building a thirty-five room home of granite and wood on the Hudson River near New York City called "Malkasten." Albert Bierstadt was one of the most prominent and influential American landscape painters of the 19th century. Provenance: John Carpenter.
