“Resolutions of the Legislature of California, requesting arms for the use of that State” (US Senate Misc. Doc. No. 35, March 19, 1860) 1pg. removed from a larger volume.  

Asks the federal government to provide 20,000 “stand of arms” plus eight batteries of light and heavy artillery. “…from our isolated position in the confederacy, it is actually necessary for the common defense and general welfare of the people of the State of California that we should be properly supplied with arms and munitions of war, sufficient for self-protection…in the event of war with or foreign invasion by any of the great powers of Europe, California, from her detached and exposes condition, would, in her defenseless situation, become a pretty to the enemy…”  Full of irony, both because of the word “confederacy”, and the date, almost exactly one year before the start of a civil war in the east that posed a very different military threat to distant California.
