xvi, 470 pp. Three folding tables; 5 engraved plates (1 hand-colored). 18.5x11.5 cm (7¼x4½") period green calf-backed boards, spine gilt, edges speckled green. First Edition.

Scarce and important early work on the art of "secret writing" and other cryptographic instruction. While well represented in institutional collections, only a single copy appear in modern auction records (and that an ex-library copy) selling at Christies in 2003 for $500. The present copy accompanied by a note from the son of British linguists Derrick James Langford and Elizabeth Sharman, both of whom were engaged in the British efforts to break the Nazi German Enigma Cipher, stating that the present volume was given to his father during the war by the British Home Office. "Foreign Office Library" bookplate on front pastedown and "Foreign Office" stamped in blind on binding sides.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
