Scarce broadside list of members of the Machrihanish Golf Club, 1895-96. A who's who of golfers in the United Kingdom (even if Tom Morris is not officially on this list!). Listed at the top is the Captain David M. Maxtone. Below that lists the Honorary Secretary David Colville, and the Honorary Treasurer Alex H. Duncan. Then it lists six members of the committee, a committee which David Colville and two others were charged with founding. The golf club officially opened in 1876 on land that Tom Morris deemed designed by God for golf. David Colville and his two friends carved out each hole, and played each hole, all in one day, likely without official permission to do so. Nonetheless, the course became a popular one, and attracted the attention of Old Tom Morris, who in 1879 played a pivotal role during the expansion from 12 holes to 18.
