Chicago Golf Club sterling silver trophy for Scratch Prize for those who have played their first game in America

Sterling silver pitcher trophy with lettering that reads "Chicago Golf Club Scratch Prize for those who have played their first game in America Presented by Joseph Leiter 1897." 25.5 cm (10") tall.

A Gorham stertling silver trophy, stamped with their hallmark on the bottom. This large pitcher has a handle, and all is embellished with rose and other floral decoration. Even the lettering is floral. The Chicago Golf Club, established in 1892, is the oldest golf club in North America, and is among the 5 clubs that established the USGA. This trophy from 1897 is a very early one, unusual in that it was presented to "those who have played their first game in America," awarded to an immigrant, tourist, or perhaps an Irishman who played at the third U.S. Open that year, which was hosted by the Chicago Golf Club.

Lot Amendments

Some wear, a few tiny chips at pitcher lip have been nicely restored, a few small dents and surface soiling; very good.
