Reports from superintendents of the several roads authorized by Congress in 1856, including Ridgley and South Pass Road; Fort Kearney South Pass and Honey Lake Road; El Paso and Fort Yuma Road; and Platte River, Dakota and L'eau qui Court Road. This was the final report of one of the most ambitious civil works projects undertaken prior to the Civil War. Carl Wheat devotes a chapter to the project in Mapping the Transmississippi West, concluding, “The Department of the Interior was caught up in the currents that surrounded the oncoming Civil War, and little came of the imposing wagon road program that it had set in motion.
